DemonCats welcome the DemonDog- Kaos!
As some of you may know, we had to put our Akita, Mishima, to sleep in February, after 15 years. She was a good dog. Stubborn, but ever faithful and loyal, we were heartbroken.
We had talked about waiting a year to see how the economy shakes out and so, before getting a new dog. We loved our Akita, but the shedding twice a year, was hard to deal with, so we were thinking about a short-haired dog. Kim was thinking Boston Terrier, but I reminded her she wanted a dog she could jog with. I suggested a pitbull, but Kim was like, No, after 15 years of a dog that was great with humans, but bad with other dogs, she wanted a dog that was going to be nice at the dog park. It didn't matter anyway, we thought, we would be waiting at least til next summer.
Case closed.
On Saturday, she went to the Montgomery County Humane Society to donate several big bags of food that Mishima had left behind. And she walked into the shelter to look at the dogs up for adoption. Tons of unfixed adult pit bulls of all types, but in a pen, was a Cane Corso puppy named Zephyr and a Staffy-mix named Jett.
The Cane Corso had cherry-eye in both eyes and was waiting for surgery, the Staffy-mix was just chillin' out playing with the bigger pitbull through the chain-link pen wall.
We asked to see her and the staff loved the idea that we'd be looking at Jett. He was 4-months old and had been at the pound for a month. He had come to the pound, because a neighbor had called the County on the original owner for leaving a two-and-a-half month old puppy in the back yard in February. Poor guy!
He was a lover, not a fighter for sure! Friendly and shy, he pressed into your hand as you petted him behind the ears. We decided right there we would take him.
We were not expecting the bureacracy behind adopting a pit-mix dog, including a home (no rentals) visit, various references and so on. The fact that we were previous Akita owners with 15 years experience with stubborn dogs made us ideal candidates. The lady who did the home inspection told us that we would wonderfully surprised with how obedient Staffy-mixes could be.
We were called on Wednesday to tell us that we were proud new parents and that they would send the puppy to the pound to get neutered and health screened. Plus we had to agree to enroll him in puppy kindergarten. And then doggie obedient class, which he must pass!
Griffin and Kim picked him up on Thursday and we had been debating between the names Bacchus and Kaos. On the spot they decided it should be Kaos. I was expecting puppy mayhem, but he has been a really chilled out (although getting your nuts taken must lead to that) and shy and just coming out of his shell. He sits, gives his paws and has taken to potty training with glee.
That lady was right!
Anyhow, here he is- Kaos!

The Inauguralleycat is a GO, GO, GO!!! GoldSprints is not! :(
The plan is to start the race at The Spanish Steps at 2 pm sharp. Registration is at 1 pm.
Remember it is a free race, but I will be charging $2.00 for the spokecard.
It's a nifty little ditty that you will be able to keep as a memento of the alleycat that took place on that winter day in Washington D.C. Limiting the run of this spokecard to 75- racers first, spectators second plus ones for the sponsors of the Obamalleycat.
The funds collected will go to the beer for the after-party, which will take place at Sgt. Steve's place near Albemarle and Connecticut Ave. NW

Viva El Che! Race Results

Reinforcements came from RVA and Boston. We'd like to thank them for the support.
We'd also like to thank Comandante Daniel at Seagull for the DOPE champion bag. Originally there were were supposed to be no prizes, but Dan liked our idea so much he sewed one up and it is BEAUTIFUL. Thanks Dan. Pics on the website soon!!!
But one revoltuionary was vying for the title of Comandante and riding for Che and that person is (drum roll, please)...
Andy Zalan, who completed the 23-miles struggle against the hordes of cars thrown against him by the oppressor, in an astounding one hour and 29 minutes. He ended up at the finish line 15 minutes ahead of his nearest comrade. The UCI has been in contact with me to request his DNA to compare to bags held in the Operacion Puerto scandal.
And Comandante Ah Zeta (as he is to be known now) also won the MARCUS COOKE AWARD!!! Joe Hendry had emailed me about a week ago and let me know that Squid and Amy were trying to get down here and present him with the trophy. They weren't able to make it, so we announced the prize to him, which was a real pleasure, as I had to bite my tongue the three or four times we had hung out before the race.
We had hoped for more racers to increase the donations we collected, but I want to thank those who did throw money in the pot for your generosity. We were able to come up with $150.00, which we split in two for two different causes.
I handed out the manifests as I announced the placings and so I forgot to make a list, but here is something, and I ask that you send me your name and placing if I left you out. Here goes.
First Place: AZ/DC
Second: Willits/DC
Third: Will/DC- who is not a courier, but a "failed grad student" who's now looking for courier work. Good rider! Anyone hiring?
Fourth: Buckley/Boston- Top Outta-Towner/Top Track Bike
Fifth: Chris/Boston
Sixth: Kevin Keefe/DC
Seventh: Bruuuce!/DC
Eighth: Need Name and City
Ninth: Need Name and City
Tenth: Byron/DC
DFL: Slavko (Lil' Borat)/DC- He won a Harden The Fuck Up bracelet.
Several people were riding their first alleycat and all finished! Congrats to Kat (Top Female) who was racing her first alleycat and ended up eleventh!!!
Thanks to Comandante Brian P for the tunes.
Thanks to Begin for the party and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!!!

Viva el Che!!! Alleycat
On October 6, we will be commemorating the 40th anniversary of the death of Ernesto "Che" Guevara.
Summarily executed by the Bolivian Army in a small field school, his legend was only born that day.
He modeled himself the New Man and in many ways he was. But there are many who despised him as a judge, jury and executioner who shot many a prisoners himself. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Two sides of a tumultuous life.
I hope to honor the more noble side of a true revolutionary.

Le Tour de Le District 2007- Le Results!!!
Le Tour de Le District 2007 has come and gone, and while attendance was down a bit, that did not prevent 30 of the best racers on the East Coast alleycat scene from battling it out on the streets of Washington DC.
DC's own Skander, winner of the recent Destination Dublin Alleycat Series, won the overall title, smoking the 34 mile course at an average of 21.93 miles an hour!!!
It almost wasn't to be, as the third member of 3,2,1,Contact! (Chris Soda) had his femur fractured in a freak training ride accident. They originally were intending to ride without him without intentions of winning, but then decided to race as they were able to get a replacement rider in the form of Chris THC Schmidt, one of DC's fastest riders! They rode where Soda couldn't and took not only the top rider in the race, but also ended up as the Top Team Overall thanks to their collective efforts!!!
We'd like to thank everyone that raced, all the companies that donated the prizes (everyone walk away with something!) and to the volunteers who manned the checkpoints! Special thanks to Bruuuce's dad for helping man the Blair Rd/Piney Branch checkpoint!!!
With 30 registered racers, we were able to raise $450.00 for the BMEF!!! Hoping for more next year!!!
The raffle to raise funds for Chris Soda while he convalesces raised a total of $235.00 for Soda!
Hoping to have a benefit race for him in the near future. Anyone have a place in D.C. that we can use for the finish line and after-party???
Let me know!!!
Racing for Victory and free beer!!!

DemonCats take Race #7 of Destination Dublin! 6th Overall in Series!! Thanks AZ, you ROCK!!!

race 7 featured 5 checkpoints, each sending out 2 p/u's and accepting 2deliveries. packages ranged in size from a bank deposit slip to fedex tubes and usps mail tubs. there were 10 jobs total, and racers could make the same delivery up to 5 times. jobs were assigned a $ value from $3 to $8, based on size and distance, and racers were given 2 hours to make as much money as they could.
there were 3 main rules: 1- racers could only p/u one package at a time. 2- racers could deliver up to 2 packages at a time, provided they came from different p/u addresses. 3- after visiting any particular checkpoint, racers had to wait at least 5 minutes before making another pick or drop at that checkpoint.
there were also 2 bonuses - $10 if a racer could complete the same job 5 times, and $20 for completing all 10 jobs at least once. the race went as smoothly as a courier race can be expected to run, meaning there were a number of minor mix ups at the checkpoints, as well as some bad math when tabulating the results. so despite what was announced at the party on saturday, the REAL results for the grand finalleycat are:
10. suave $127
9. marco $131 (philly)
8. mark katz $132
7. kyle $136
6. colin $142
5. bruce $144

2007 alleycat campaign results so far!
DC. Man OVERBOARD!. 02/10/07 - 18th Place Finish-60+ Racers
Boston. Abide. 03/03/07- 36th out 37th finishers. 140 registered
RVA. Ides of March. 03/17/07- 7th out of 27 racers. Top Out-of-Town
Destination Dublin 2. 04/04/07- 9th out of 19 racers. Only racer to collect all three W/C tokens.
Philly. April Fool's. 04/14/07- 6th out of 300+ registered racers! Nice
Oh, the pain! Paris-Roubaix? No. The R.E.Load 8th Annual April Fool's Race!!!
Only two hundred spokecards and manifests had been printed. Three hundred racers showed up. Hmmmmm. What to do? Roland announced that the registered racers would get sent on their way. Unregistered racers could ride for free sans the t-shirts or spokecards. They would ride to a print shop Critical Mass style to get more.
As the race officials started handing out manifest, I stuck my hand out and ended up with a manifest. AZ got one from someone who didn't plan to race. Jacob S. gave me his spoke card for the race, since he had DFL in mind.
Who do we ride with we ponder? We see Squid and mosey over. Since Squid won the race last year, he's a good bet to follow, since he has an uncanny knack for choosing good wheels in a city not his own.
The serious crews have since taken off and we see a good group moving out. We latch on, but at the first stop sign, one of their riders on a fixie falls over. Followed by another. And another.
A Philly rider named Jeff rides up on us and after a quick chat we decide to follow him. As he takes off FAST on his fixie I see the R.E.Load winner bag for the HOUR OF POWER race. Fuck, this is going to be fast and hard.
I've raced in five of eight April Fool's and have never had the opportunity to get in a good break.
This was a good break.
At this point the race becomes a blur. For me, it was to become a ride of constant gap closing and riding within sight, praying for traffic to slow down the front a bit for me not to permanently dropped. Early on our group was whittled to three as Squid dropped off the pace. After that, it was a ride of only twenty miles, but at the max and full of craziness.
There were five bar check points where the beer stops were much appreciated. Bob and Barbara's, The Tattoed Mom's and so on.
In one we had to write an essay to our female pseudo-East Block Female Prison Guards who kept us in JAIL for 5 minutes.
At another we wrote Haiku:
I bike messenger
I am always riding fast
I am always late
The Exercise Girls whipped us into shape with push-ups, jumping jacks and a two block bike portage- cyclo-cross style!
The skateboard ride while shooting at a spinning target, followed by a shot of tabasco or a shot of vodka. I discovered that the tabasco followed by the vodka leave a pleasant Bloody Mary taste in your mouth. Yummm.
The drag race back along the river for several miles back to the R.E.Load store to look for Bilenky Pat who was dressed as a Playboy Bunny. Anna Nicole had nothing on him! At least not now. That ride was run between 23 and 25 milles an hour through traffic! Jeff and AZ were constantly a good 500 feet in front of me and was the only gap I could not close down. Thank God for the checkpoint!
We stopped and made calls to Crown Fried chicken to check on the price of a 15 piece box. A beauty parlor to check on the price of a styling.
Finding the flyer for the NoteKillers show on a wall of flyers. Multiple signatures. A minimum amount of fake checkpoints for a change.
I must say that we worked the course really really good as a riding group.
Finish time was 6:15, so at about 6:05 we sprinted the last 20 blocks to the warehouse in North Philly where the party and awards ceremony. Later in the night a rave was to be going on, so we had to vacate the premises by a certain time.
It was nice to chill on a beautiful afternoon. Going to get some chinese. Having a safety meeting with good friends. Catching up on old times. The Mr. Softee Ice Cream truck and the Double Dip Double Cone. I hadn't had one of those since I was five years old in South Texas! Wow.
I poured a beer and set myself in a big comfy chair. Roland came up to me to clarify why he had two manifests with #106 on it. One with 10 points and one with 1900 or so on it. After taking my explanation and the fact that I had ridden with Jeff, I was left with the vague feeling that I might have done really well!
Awards came! The Top Six Men in reverse order:
6th- ME!!! DC. HA! That was an awesome race! My best April Fool's ever!
5th- AZ. DC. He rode absolutely perfectly!
4th- Eric? Philly.
3rd- Sharky- Philly.
2nd- Austin Horse- NYC- Top outta-town- The National Champ shows why he is the National Champ!
drum roll please-
1st PLACE AND 2007 APRIL FOOLS CHAMP- Jeff O'Neall!!! There couldn't have been a more deserving winner. He guided us through mile after mile of checkpoints on a trackbike no less. He won the beautiful RE Load Bag, a Fuji Pro Track bike and fork, crazy amounts of schwag and the crowd's applause and adulation and AZ's and my eternal thanks for a great race!!!
After the party, we rode back to the car and ended up at a small pizza take out on N.2nd called Rustico. Had a slice, while AZ got a sub. They allow you to bring in beer, so I got a big bottle of some Carlsberg special edition brew to celebrate.
We finally rolled out of Philly around 10 pm, spent from the day's event. AZ dropped me off. I walked into my quiet house. Sat at my new table, had a smoke and a glass of milk. It was time to climb into my big comfy bed and dream of First Place next year! Not! :)
Racing for Victory and free beer!!!
